Chapter 2
1. Choose one of the following Internet characteristics (listed below) and give an example, from your life, as to how the characteristic has impacted your communication process:
              a. Time and Space
              b. Social Space
              c. Private vs. Public

2. How do you understand the concept of space when using a computer network (please refer to one of 3 types of space mentioned in the chapter)

Chapter 4
1. How does the Internet support both  informational and interpersonal activities? Give specific examples.
2. Find an example of an advocacy website and evaluate the site content based on the following 5 criteria: accuracy, authority, objectivity, coverage, and currency.

  1. Chapter 2:
1.)Time and Space in communication is described of being the amount of time and distance a message has to go to be delivered. An example in my life would have to be a cell phone. A cell phone has allowed me to nearly instantly connect to anyone in the world and to be able to communicate with this person as if there right next to me. For me I went from a landline that restricted me to be were the phone was located to a cell phone that allowed me to place calls anywhere.
2.)One of the three concepts of space is social space. Social space concept is the idea that communication between people in cyberspace acts as if it was in real space. Cyberspace may not be real space but the idea is that, people will act and behave if it was. This will be the case with face to face visual but once anonymity is added, I believe this idea falls apart. Anonymity adds the ability to avoid repercussions with actions done.
    Chapter 4:
1.)A relatively new technology is targeted ads. This ad will target the user specifically to make a personal connection with them and to convey a message. The user will be more willing to click on this ad than an ad with no relevance. Another example could be YouTube. YouTube offers user submitted videos with a wide variety of information and each video has the potential to make a personal connection.
2.)The website I chose was unitedway.org. I have seen this organization all around the Quad Cities and wanted to do a little more research. Their vision is to envision all individuals will have the opportunity to achieve education, income stability and healthy lives. When reviewing the accuracy the website, sources are listed in the work they did with outside links linking to other organizations and acknowledgements to legitimate companies with people who were involved. The front page of the website has a large banner explaining how to give, advocate and volunteer. They want the viewer to get involved and be part of the organization. This website ends in an .org meaning organization showing their intentions to their viewer that they are a legitimate website wanting to help. Their main posts of their work included their goal, strategy, focus areas and overview along with 114 page PDF file. The latest post on the blog is five days old with the average days between posts being four days.

  2. Chapter 2
    1.C. Private Vs. Public
The concept of whether a message should be posted in a public or private forum is a part of daily life. Each time anyone posts something on social media they make the choice of whether or not the message is private or public. Personally this concept has impacted my communication process between my friends and family on Facebook. Instead of making an event on Facebook to invite a small group of people, I use a message between the group. This way it is more private and safe between the members. In other words, having the choice to make a conversation private or public enables people to streamline the message for the receiver.
    2.
One concept of space is cyberspace. Cyberspace is defined as "an imaginary construction of space that is built by technological and interpersonal interactions." People in cyberspace sometimes "develop a belief that there is a kind of actual space behind the screen, you can't see it but you know it is there". I understand cyberspace because I grew up with many different virtual communities on the computer. I really enjoyed the multi-player virtual realms with maps and quests. I knew each community like the back of my hand, and sometimes it really did feel like I was in my own little place. I had my own friends, my own schedule, and community in cyberspace.
    Chapter 4
    1. The internet supports interpersonal activities by enabling people to connect with others from around the world romantically, professionally, or just for friendship maintenance. At the same time the internet supports informational activities by providing people with answers, assistance, facts, and other helpful information. The internet makes it possible to have both interpersonal and informational combined in one site by having a group with similar background or interest and providing information to them. Club pages, Fan pages, or even college websites are examples of combining interpersonal and informational.
    2. I chose www.aspca.org
The website is accurate in portraying what the ASPCA stands for and their information is educational. The site also has a long list of other sites and affiliates which add to their credibility.
The website demonstrates their authority by having a very professional look and message. The website also shows authority by showing all the aspects of their mission making them look like they have a wide outreach.
The website has very nice coverage of what they are helping to achieve, what is underway, and what they have already done. The site has an expansive menu of various pages and helpful facts. It appears that the site covers every aspect of what they are involved in.
The site is very up to date and current which also helps with their accuracy and authority, as well as coverage. The menu has a section for breaking news and upcoming projects adding to their currency.

  3. Chpt 2
    1. Time and Space: Since I talk to some friends from another country communication is a little different from normal messaging or talking. There is about a 6 hours time zone difference so they go to bed quite a bit earlier then I. Sometimes I get bored and wish I could talk to them but its about 3 a.m over there. Also since they live farther away it rather impossible to go and visit them like you would a normal friend would.

    2. One of the spaces mentioned was "Social Space". That is where people on Cyberspace, or in real life, where people gather to to interact and communicate. It could range from like a chat room in the internet, to a park in real life.

    Chpt 4
    1. One of the ways it can be interpersonal would be, like i mentioned before, people who wouldn't normally have met now able to. Just to think 10 years ago, about half of our lives , none of this would have been possible. Some of the things would be like Skyping or like a youtube video, a facebook message or an email.
    2. The one that I am going to do is http://www.nra.org
Why? because it was the first thing that came to mind. The accuracy is very accurate. It has news sources and other lead offs to other sites with the NRA. It seems very offical compared to maybe a site that just takes info from other sites and compiles them into one. It feels like it gets the info from the source and its accurate. Some of the stuff in it are rather accurate. I don't know much about the NRA or guns or stuff so it seems like a lot to me.

  4. Chapter 2
    Private vs. Public
    1. You hear on the news that cause controversy that cannot be fixed because what should have been private was made public for everyone else to see. This happens a lot. If you go online and buy something you put your credit card online whether they see it or not sometimes sites are not as protected. This works with social media whether what you post is private or public. On Facebook you can select who can see your profile and or your statuses. When I am on Facebook I tend to block relatives or employers for only my friends and I to see.

    2. Although cyberspace does not physical exist people believe it to be an actual place. People tend to act just like they would talking to someone face to face but in reality isn’t the same because when you talk on the internet you are more likely to say something you normally would not to someone’s face. People feel like cyberspace can be a secret world that is just as real as talking to people who are right in front of you holding a real conversation.

    Chapter 4
    1. Newspapers now a days are both print and online accessible. The way they make money is by selling advertising space. They keep the news and communicate with us to let us be aware of what is happening in the world and what is new in the world. Sometimes online newspapers only show you a portion of information to get you to be more interested in the whole story so you will go out and purchase a newspaper.

    2. Make-a-Wish was one of the first websites I thought of that follows all five criteria. This website is very accurate because it is a perfect non-profit organization that provides 100 percent real information. This website shows authority by the real experiences that have happened already with the granted wishes that have already been made. Make a Wish is objective because they try to get the word out there not only for cancer ill children but also for any child that has a life threatening illness. This site covers a lot from stories to grant wishes to who started make a wish. Make a Wish earns their money from fundraisers, special events, and donations which end up going towards funding to make kids wishes come true.

  5. Chapter 2
    1. B. Social Space
Social space is communication through cyber space in which you do not actually see the person but you can talk or “communicate back a forth. This could mean anything from a text message to a Facebook message. The way this relates to my life is because this summer I worked at the Will County Computer Forensics lab. While at work we used computers to communicate with potential criminals on line. We did this through creating a fake yahoo messenger account and pretending to be someone trying to buy drugs. Through this social space we actually caught the drug dealer. Although this story has no relevant impact on my daily social communication it makes you wonder if who you think you are messaging is really the person they say they are.
    2. When using a computer network the concepts of “space” is broken down into three different spaces. The one space I am going to focus on is Social space. Social space is the communication of two people as if they were in real space. People often communicate in virtual space as if they were face to face with the person they are talking to.

    Chapter 4

    1. The internet supports both informational and interpersonal activities by allowing users the ability to search as they please. With people using the internet for many different reasons the Internet needed to support many different functions. Interpersonal Activities allow people to use websites such as Facebook or E-Harmony to communicate with others and develop romantic relationships. Where on the other hand some people use the Internet for informational activities. Students need to look up things online for a research project, they can simply search what they need and can access the site. An example would be if you need to look up something for an anatomy class you can.
    2. www.cancer.org is an advocacy website for cancer research. I knew about this website because every year my family does a cancer walk in memory of my Grandpa. The accuracy of this website is spot on. It allows you to learn about the different types of cancer, while offering support for families suffering. The reason you know it is accurate is because there is a 5 page list of sources that back up the information listed on the site. This website demonstrates authority with the sleek look and offering different locations for viewers to volunteer. The websites objective is listed on a banner at the top of the screen and it is to raise money for cancer research and educate others on cancer. On the task bar there is an option for news on current cancer topics. This allows people to stay up to date on the current problems. The currency of this page has the most up to date research information and help services available.

  6. Chapter 2
1.Time and Space has impacted my communication process because my best friend Kristy Lives in a different time zone than me, So when she is calling me when she wakes up in the morning I am still sleeping and I wake up at 7AM. Kristy lives 8 hours away; we are unable to just have a lunch, because there is a huge distance between the two of us, luckily we have cells phones so I can text her or call her to keep good communication going. Another example would be I am able to communicate with my professors through email anytime anywhere from my cell phone which is very convenient because I live 20 miles from Ambrose.

    2. Cyber Space is an imagined place in the realm of electronic devices. Cyber space is a virtual reality or virtual world created by computer networks, it is a place where information is exchanged or exists.

    Chapter 4
    1. The Internet supports informational activities because you are able to go on CNN.com or HLN.com and be provided the latest news updates. Sites like accuweather.com provide information about the weather to prepare you for the day. Also Beeline provides information about account balances, financial aid, school schedules and much more information. The Internet supports interpersonal activities by allowing you to connect and communicate with business associates, friends, and loved one. It also allows you to connect with others who may be thousands of miles away and build a relationship through Facebook, instagram, and flicker. Dating sites also allow people to build interpersonal relationships with one another.

    2.http://www.nationalcac.org/
The website I chose accurately represents The National Children’s Advocacy Center is all about, which is; The NCAC models, promotes, and delivers excellence in child abuse response and prevention through service, education, and leadership. The material provided by this site is very educational and provides accurate information about upcoming events, latest news, and conferences. The NCAC is backed by Margaret Hoelzer, an Olympic silver medal swimmer, who received services from NCAC because she was sexually abuse while she was a child. As a result of the NCAC she was able to overcome her traumatic experience. The NCAC site is very reputable with plenty sources of information that is well organized which provides authority. The websites information has links to other sites. The information on this site appears to be current.

  7. Chapter 2

2-1. Social space has greatly changed the way that I communicate in this day and age. For work, it enhances communication with team members from other countries, allowing me to make a different type of connection to them that I would otherwise not have due to what technology is capable of. In my personal life, I am able to foster a better relationship as well with family members who do not live nearby and are unavailable for face to face interaction. It may not be the best type of communication; however it is better than what we used to do.

2-2. Space has no limits due to computer networks. The space is unlimited and not constrained by physical or real issues such as lack of data, lack of physical storage, or any other issues. According to this chapter, time and space has greatly changed with technology. It used to be that information could only go as fast as the train carrying it. Also referenced in the chapter, is that we humans have always been looking to change and enhance time and space and converge them into one, and I believe we have done well in that aspect. There is no more concept of space when using a computer network, as it’s only limitation is the person using it.

    Chapter 4

4-1. The internet supports both informational and interpersonal activities. In many cases it actually converges those two into one. Take for example a breaking news story is posted to a news media site. Now people can share that with their group of friends or comment on it and debate it with complete strangers, whom they wil never have to meet or apologize to as it is done in the digital forum.

    4-2.

www.iava.org (Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America)

Accuracy: Accurate due to the nature of the site. This is a site that lists resources available. Easily verified and lists references about any changes.

Authority: Very well known organization that was created by and for Veterans.

Objectivity: Neutral. Does not have an issue, nor does it push an agenda on a reader.

Coverage: Broad. They have a wealth of info listed as well as qualifying links and partnerships to other sites.

Currency: Current as the wars are still going on and Veterans are returning home and needing these benefits and the info provided. This info will keep changing as the resources and laws change.

  8. Chapter 2:
    1. Time and space has most affected the business aspect of my life. I went from working in a locally operated bank where the most useful way of communication information with my coworkers was to simply pick up the phone and give them a call. Now I work as part of a globally operated team and while it is not always possibly for me to quickly call a colleague that is based in New Zealand for example, I can use instant messaging, share my desktop screen with them so that they can see what I am working on, or send an email and they will be able to reply to me at their earliest convenience with the time differences.
    2. The best way that I understand the concept of space when using a computer network is the physical space. I understand how information is transferred between networks and computers to reach whoever I am trying to communicate with. This would include understanding how information is translated by our computer’s hardware and how the data is transferred to the receiver by collection of wires, routers, switches, and Internet Service Providers.
    Chapter 4:
    1. The Internet supports informational activity by allowing a person to search topics that they would like to learn about using search engines and bringing back a great variety of information for that person to read. This includes things such as online journals and newspaper articles, to personal websites and discussion forum type sites. Likewise, the Internet supports interpersonal communication by allowing people to interact online which can result in building relationships or simply exchanging information with one another. This is mostly supported by places such as chat forums, online blogs, discussion boards, as well as online gaming.
    2. The advocacy website that I found was http://mentalhealthsummit.wordpress.com/. It seems to have accuracy about bills that are trying to be passed into law and useful information about these bills and the representatives that are working to pass them. It has some authority because there are legislators that are part of the metal health advocacy groups running the site; however since it is a blog site it is also mostly opinion. The site’s objective is to raise awareness for mental health so although it is for a good cause I would say that it is biased. The site offers in depth information into bills and mental health issues to help those new to the subject really understand their cause. Lastly, since most of the blogs focus on bills being passed I would say that although time between blogs varies, the site offers up to date coverage about bills and mental health issues.

  9. Chapter 2:
    1. Time and space is the most common internet characteristic in my life. Time and space is the distance that a message must travel in order to get to its destination. I use it when I communicate with my friends or girlfriend who all live hours away. Instead of sending a letter, which could take days to get there, I can use a cell phone to call or text message them, or I can also use Facebook to talk to them and they recieve my messages almost instantly.
    2. The way I understand cyberspace the best is to think of it as social space. It does not physically exist, but people act like it does. When people talk on Facebook for example, they act as if they are really face to face with somebody. The only difference is that everyone seems to feel more comfortable saying things on the internet that they probably wouldn't in real life.
    Chapter 4:
    1. The way the internet supports informational activities is by giving you the latest news as it unfolds. A newspaper can only be put out once a day and that is all the information it can give you. But, for example, you can go to cnn.com and get the latest breaking news that may have just happened. The newspaper cannot update itself during the day as can a website. The internet also supports interpersonal activities for people sucha as Facebook or a dating website. It allows people to develop relationships and search for different things that interest them.
    2. The advocacy group I found was Music for All. It is a not for profit organization whose purpose is to promote music eductaion and fine arts in schools across the country. They try to use music and the arts to promot positive, life changing activities for youth. The information on their website is very accurate. They update the blog and information weekly, and sooner if needed. They make their money by holding events all year long with different forms of music in each one and they also have apparel and cd's you can order off of their website.
